CHAPTER SIXTEEN

JAMESON

Three days after my conversation with Brie, I was driving the kids to their grandparent’s house. Both twins were strapped into their booster seats, chatting excitedly about what they thought their grandparents had planned for them, and I tried to pay attention, but my mind was restless.

Patty and Daniel Johnson were Laura’s parents, but I had grown very close to them throughout our relationship. When Laura passed away, we remained close, and I tried to make sure they were as involved in the kids’ lives as they wanted to be. Laura had been their only child, so now all they had left was us.

We pulled into the driveway, and it was no surprise that seconds later, the front doors opened, and Patty and Daniel stepped onto the porch as if they had been standing eagerly at the window waiting for our arrival—which I had no doubt was exactly what had occurred.

“Grammy! Grampy!” The twins yelled in unison, immediately unbuckling themselves when we rolled to a stop and catapulted across the lawn.

I chuckled as I climbed out of the car, watching as Patty and Daniel bent to pick up a child each, giving them hugs and pressing kisses to their cheeks. Their gazes pulled away from the twins and landed on me, and matching, affectionate grins tugged across their faces.

I reached up and waved at them as I crossed the lawn.

“Jameson,” Patty cooed, pulling me into a hug when I stepped onto the porch. “It’s so nice to see you.”

“C’mon in,” Daniel said with a grin before turning into the house with Nash propped firmly on his hip.

I walked into the home that I knew so well, the one where Laura and I spent countless holidays and celebrations. I was not particularly close with my father, and my mother passed away years ago. So, Patty and Daniel had been stand-in parents for me as well when Laura and I had begun dating.

They set the twins down, and Patty looked at them both with a smile as everyone walked into the living room. When Patty and Daniel sat down, the twins resumed their perches on their grandparent’s laps.

“How have you been?” Daniel asked, brushing back Nash’s wild hair. “How have you both been?” He looked at Nora.

Nora’s face lit up. “I’ve been so good,” she gushed. “We went to the fair last weekend, and I got to ride the rides, and eat fair food. Nash got lost, though.”

“You got lost?” Patty’s eyes shot up as she looked at her grandson, who gave her a shy nod.

“It was really scary.”

“I bet it was,” she looked at me before turning her attention back to the kids. “What happened, Nashy Boy?”

“I followed someone I thought was Nora and then I didn’t know how to find Dad. Brie’s aunt found me, though, and brought me back.”

He slid off of Daniel’s lap, walking over to the toy chest at the far end of the room. He rifled through the toys for a second, picking up an action figure and then heading back over to the couch, where he slid onto the cushion beside me.
